Description
In 1976, the U.S. Congress designated almost 80,000 acres of Shenandoah National Park as wilderness to be preserved unimpaired for present and future generations. Shenandoah National Park is part of the National Wilderness Preservation System, which protects wilderness areas across the USA.
Wilderness areas provide sanctuary for humans, habitat for plants and wildlife, sites for research and reservoirs of clean, free-flowing water. In the densely-populated eastern United States, areas preserved as wilderness take on a special meaning. Once affected by humans, Shenandoah’s wilderness is now set aside with the ultimate protection we can give our public lands.
