Description
From fairly early in the 20th century, driving to a National Park became a recreational activity for millions, a way to escape the pressures of everyday life, Shenandoah National Park in Virginia is within a three-hour drive of half the population of the United States, and over the years millions of people have indeed come. Once here, they explore the park via the famous Skyline Drive. Skyline Drive is a premier road within a park. In fact, Skyline Drive was started in 1931, before Shenandoah National Park itself was established! The Drive was seen at the outset as “the greatest single feature” of the projected park. 105 miles long, Skyline Drive winds north-to-south through the park along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. Some 75 overlooks provide places to turn off, park, and enjoy the sweeping views to east or west.
