Description
Marys Rock Tunnel, at mile 32.2 on Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, was an engineering challenge to construct, made no easier by the many natural springs that seep between the rocks along the mountainside. Construction workers bored Marys Rock tunnel through 670 feet of solid granite at an altitude of 3,514 feet. Modern tunnels are now much longer, but in 1932, when Marys Rock tunnel was open to visitors, it attracted a fascinated audience and became an iconic image of the Park and was used on almost all early park souvenirs.
