Description
Wildflowers abound in Shenandoah National Park, providing a beautiful and varied display from spring through fall. Wildflowers comprise 862 species, more than half of the 1406 vascular plant species found in the Park. This rich diversity of wildflowers is particularly evident in spring at the lower elevations along streams such as South River, Hughes River, Rose River, and Mill Prong. In summer and fall, the banks along Skyline Drive and the Big Meadows area are great places to see wildflowers.
One of the most whimsical wildflowers of spring in Shenandoah National Park is Dutchman’s Breeches (Dicentra cucullaria). From mid-March through April, you may find the two-spurred white flowers dangling along a stem like a row of old-fashioned pantaloons hung out on a line to dry. Bees pollinate the flowers, but ants carry away the seeds to their nests, where they germinate. This species is related to another member of the poppy family, Bleeding Hearts.
